Tip # 222, Going to the Dogs
Philip from Santa Fe wrote me saying he has a mobile dog grooming business and asking what can he and his brother do to stay in business?
I remember when I was a dog walker, Angel (the most beautiful German Sheppard) and I would venture out to the park which had a large fenced in dog run. Open to all dogs that behaved. Needless to say we didn’t stay long, but there were always twenty to thirty dogs with their owners in attendance. I never once saw a mobile van offering dog grooming, nail clipping, or shampooing. Identify who your customer’s are, albeit even the harry ones and walk the walk with them, literally.
Tip # 410
Boom or Bust – a submitted question while writing the book that still holds strong
My brother and I have been in home construction for ten years. New construction is dead. We’ve tried changing our model by seeking smaller jobs, remodels, and repairs. Nothing we try is catching on. Can you help us save our family business? (4/10/10)
This is a tough one. The headwinds that you guys are facing are incredibly strong and probably won’t abate anytime soon. Having said that, I’m witnessing the very same boom-bust game with the new car dealerships, not able to sell many new cars too. A friend of mine that works for Subaru tells me, “Our service department is booked five weeks in advance.” (A new record while the sales departments are laying off) People are opting to repair what they have, instead of purchasing new. The big box home improvement stores confirm this trend. (Same store sales are up an average of 8% vs. a year ago in 09) Continue reading “Tip # 410” »
Guest: Harvey Mackay
“You can’t quit now!” You won’t know how it ends.
Is your business winning? If not, don’t look at it as though it’s a negative…… it could be a test, He’s using you to s t r e t c h you for a plan He has for you, something bigger. “A winner is someone who recognizes his God-given talents, works his tail off to develop them into skills, and uses these skills to accomplish his goals.” Larry Bird NBA – Boston Celtics/Indiana Pacers. Happy 55th birthday, Larry from all of us at The Steve Henry Show!
I can’t think of anyone more qualified than New York Times best-selling author, Harvey Mackay, to explain how we should play to win when the forces of defeat come against us. His new book is titled, The Mackay MBA of Selling in the Real World. It’s the 36th chapter, There’s no education like adversity. You’ll hear testimonies from Jack Canfield (Chicken Soup for the Soul) and Jerry Colangelo (Phoenix Suns - World Champion Arizona Diamondbacks), former guest on The Steve Henry Show, and one of Harvey’s best friends, College Football’s Hall of Fame Coach, Lou Holtz, who says “every single person faces adversity!” “Adversity causes some people to break and others to break records”, says Harvey Mackay, my special guest this Saturday on The Steve Henry Show, live on News Talk 92.3 KTAR from 12-1 MST.
I’ve discovered a key ingredient that will assist you in persevering. I’ve borrowed it from one of Harvey’s last books, Use Your Head to get Your Foot in the Door, how humanizing your opponents will set the stage for a resounding victory in your small business. “Anyone can Google, but this technique makes it more personal and works 99.999% of the time”, says Harvey.

My in studio guest this week began his business career about as humbly as one could coming from the mean streets on the south side of Chicago to eventually attaining the moniker of “The Godfather of Arizona’s Sports.”

Is there life after sports for Jerry Colangelo? I’d NEVER bet against this man’s passion to seek and conquer his next assignment.
